What’s Your Favorite Party Game? Need New Ideas!

Main Post:

Hey r/partygames !

I’m always on the hunt for awesome party games to keep our gatherings lit. We usually play the classics like Charades, Truth or Dare, Cards Against Humanity, and Kings Cup, but I’m curious to see what you all are into.

Any unique or underrated games that get your crew going? Bonus points for games that work well with larger groups and keep everyone entertained.

Also, if you have any cool twists on the classic games, drop them here! We’ve been mixing elements from different games to make our own hybrid party games, and it’s been a blast.

Can’t wait to hear your suggestions!

Top Comment: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamecategory/1030/party-game/linkeditems/boardgamecategory?pageid=1&sort=rank Any of the ones towards the top of that list are going to be great. Codenames works with lots of people and has an adult version that's even more fun for the right crowd. Blood on the Clocktower is beyond fantastic, like it's not even in the same ballpark as any of these other games, but it's very complex and while you don't need to understand all the rules that well to play it, you need an experienced storyteller to run it. Monikers is my newest favorite, works for big groups, and if you like charades you'll love it. Telestrations is incredible and they have adult and large group versions. The large group version plays 12 I think. Wavelength is probably my go to for really large groups. It's also the one to play when you're still waiting for people to show up since people can just jump in and set up time is nothing. It's not on the list, but if you have an adult crowd with a good sense of humor that knows each other well enough to make fun of each other, Stir the Pot is the game that's elicited the most laughter of anything I've ever played. Those are just some of the ones I've played and that boardgamegeek.com list has plenty of other great ones. There's so many out there! Get a few of those and your Cards Against Humanity box will just collect dust, I promise.

Are there any simple party games that you can make at home, such as mafia?

Main Post:

I'm having a small party tonight with about 7 people. Are there any fun party games that are quick to make at home, like mafia? We have simple things at home that come with most board games like dices, hourglass, etc. Let me know! Thanks

Top Comment: time's up/Monikers - or rather their public domain version Celebrities. There are some rules online, but you want those that are close to Time's up version (3 rounds - description, one word clue, charades). The game is played in pairs (so: 4,6,8 doesn't work with odd numbers at all). In public domain version, you create the cards as a part of the game - so people will write on them stuff you'll then play with. Fake artist come to new york You need: official rules (online), paper, coloured felt pens (each player needs a different colour!). Win, lose or banana - make 6 cards (2 or each), you'll find rules for 4-6 player games on bgg page. This is for max 6 players. Or you could make more copies of cards and make 2 groups play in parallel. A game lasts 30 seconds, usually people play this for 15 of so minutes before they get tired. Also check this iteration of Mafia - no player elimination! (but you want 9+ people for this) https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/16562/wolfenpdf

Ideas on how to play Sploder games again?

Main Post:

I've been looking at a lot of methods to be able to play Sploder games again and the only thing left that seems to work is Flashpoint Ultimate. Unfortunately, I don't have have 800+ GB spare lying around. Now this is kinda a shot in the dark but how does Flashpoint Ultimate run Sploder games? Is it possible to download certain files for a game from FU and play them without FU?

Top Comment: You don't need to use Flashpoint Ultimate, as far as I'm aware. Have it working on Flashpoint Infinity.

30 Random Game Ideas! #3!

Main Post:

Part 1

Part 2

Part 4

    1. A game where you attempt to sell as many of your own organs as fast as possible before you die.
  • 2. A game where the only objective is to slow down people from their everyday grind/task. This could be played in several ways, such as the player being a spirit, actual person, creature, god, etc...
  • 3. A game where you play as a Godzilla esque monster and get to level a really massive city. The more you destroy, the more powerful and large you get. It's a bit like that game released for PS3/4 recently, but perhaps actually good.
  • 4. A game a bit like Papers Please, but where you file/drop files/documents/mail into specific drop boxes, as they pile up at an alarming rate.
  • 5. You and a crew of road workers are trying to fix or build a road, but tragically (and hilariously) people are ruining the road by driving their cars on it that explode, littering, slowing down your work, and basically being a nuisance. Try to not get anyone killed, it's a bit like a reversed version of Frogger. Perhaps the more road you finish, the easier it gets.
  • 6. Go to a museum and draw mustaches on all the famous artworks on display, avoid security cameras and guards, as well as try to put up your own paintings.
  • 7. Bring people back to life in order to solve a mystery. Perhaps you can only bring back one or two people. Choose wisely.
  • 8. Repair damaged robots and create robots to help Skynet become reality.
  • 9. An Unreal Engine esque game from the perspective of a police helicopter, where you play as a person driving away from police cars in a neighborhood, simple, but eventually things get hectic, the military is called in, streets are blockaded, and you must drive through buildings and offroad to get away from them.
  • 10. A game where you make coffee and drink the whole pot, then make another pot. The more pots you drink and make, the more twitchy and difficult it gets to make them. Don't break the machine or pot.
  • 11. You are a billionaire in a rather corrupt and lawless country. Go out in the crowded streets, and simply buy someone with your immense wealth. See if you made a good choice.
  • 12. A VR game where you are an astronaut in space performing operations from a space shuttle and must survive a Gravity esque situation.
  • 12.1. A VR game where you are an astronaut performing operations on things like the Hubble Space Telescope, and have the danger of dropping screws that float away, etc.
  • 13. Go outside and loosen the screws on large bridges, break train tracks, ruin roads, cut support wires on sky-scrapers, and basically cause a huge mess.
  • 14. Play as a police officer and try to purposefully make people pay up despite abiding the law and not speeding.
  • 15. Break into your neighbor's house and take their furniture/money/X-Box/personal belongings and try not to get caught. They come in your house and look around for their things later, so try to hide it and be prepared.
  • 16. Go on national news and express your opinion on a situation with other people, despite you knowing nothing about it. Try to choose the best option.
  • 17. A proper game/simulator where you get to simulate the Apollo lunar landings, as well as walk on the surface. Haven't found or seen one yet.
  • 18. Take a sledgehammer and break concrete on the road. Eat it, and try to convince other people to do the same thing.
  • 19. Try to convince Death not to take you away, despite being dead or seriously ill.
  • 20. A game where you herd bison/animals towards a village for food.
  • 21. Control a probe and land it on a comet in first person, like the ESA did.
  • 22. In order to get no wrinkles at all, you must control your emotions and never smile, frown, or smirk, try to keep them under control.
  • 23. A multiplayer shooter where every time you shoot your gun, you lose health.
  • 24. Time travel to stop a bomb from exploding, by watching the person who placed and activated it, as well as try to evacuate civilians.
  • 25. You are now a ghost, and can only hold certain objects for a very short amount of time, try to do your normal every day things.
  • 26. A tsunami has hit your city, try to stay afloat and on your roof as your house speedily goes down a long flooded road towards the city.
  • 27. Stop the world from ending due to a nuclear holocaust by simply offering all the leaders of the world lemonade from your lemonade stand.
  • 28. You are pulled over by a very aggressive and furious police officer for speeding. Try to talk him out of the ticket you cannot afford to pay.
  • 29. Play as a lifeguard on the beach or at a large crowded pool and make sure nothing bad happens.
  • 30. You are a time traveler. Go on the Internet and freak people out by predicting everything or certain events in their life.

That's all for now, I once again must apologize for the long delay for this one. I hope these are at least decent, if you have any suggestions or other ideas for them/based on them, comment away.

Once again, these ideas are completely free to use! If any of you ever make something out of them, please link them to me! I'd love to see what you come up with.

How do you come up with your best game concepts?

Main Post:

I struggle to come up with game concepts I am interested in. Perhaps I'm too involved in video gaming to enjoy a simple concept, but I really struggle with this task. I do not want any game ideas shared in this thread; I just want to share my methods for coming up with game ideas that could be manageable and at the same time, fun to make happen. If you have your own techniques, feel free to share.

I used to start with a story idea, because if it can be told as a story, it can at least be an animation. Well, that's actually not a good idea, because then you have to make sure you have a decent plot and not everyone cares about stories... I don't.

Now, I start with simple gameplay ideas, like a gravity-shifting puzzle for example. Then, I either combine that idea with another idea or throw the idea into a "use it later" list. Later, if I haven't used the idea, I randomly pick it from that list along with something else on the list and try to make the combination work.

What are your habits when making up game ideas? How do you choose what to make?

Top Comment:

I have two methods.

  1. The brain dump method: When a theme is presented in a Game Jam, or I suddenly feel like basing my game off of something, I take my pen & paper or Notepad++ and a timer set to 1 hour. From there, I frantically write out a long list of single-sentence game descriptions that's barely related to the theme. Seeing that I'm writing this almost instinctively, most of the listed ideas suck (example: last global game jam, I had a description for a game, "something involving white text on black background"). But a few are strong enough to make a nice prototype (example, "a game where you throw your eyeballs to see past corners"), and I basically choose one of those to get started.
  2. The Molydeux method: I start with a ridiculous question, such as "what would a 2nd person game play like?" From there, I try to develop an answer ( Mirror's Edge, if Faith is an NPC that's always following a character you control), and make a prototype out of that.

I've gone through #OneGameAMonth with these strategies, so they work pretty darn well for me. As usual, your mileage may vary.

Lets talk about unique game ideas

Main Post:

A lot of us get pretty annoyed when game after game just clones already existing ideas or changes something miniscule, so I'm interested to hear in what unique ideas you guys have rolling around in the back of your head, whether it's about setting, plot, characters, game mechanics, or anything else.

I have an idea for an RPG set in prison. IDK if it has already been done or not.

You start the game getting off the bus and entering the prison in a scene similar to Shawshank Redemption. After that it is almost completely open world.

There are two ways to win the game, escape or getting parole.

Escape can take a few paths, from the silent middle of the night escape to the prisoners revolt.

Another route to victory would be to get parole.

In terms of combat and feel the game would be similar to Assassins Creed.

In the prison there is an open world where you can make alliances with various gangs or the guards, establish a reputation for yourself, etc. You can choose to be a big brute character or a sneaky weaselly guy or anything in between.

The personality of your character (if he is charismatic he will be better suited to lead a prison revolt for example), and the groups he associates with (gangs have disagreements, or the guards will treat you nice of you help them) will determine how he can interact with the world. A rival gang might choose to attack you, or if you step to far out of line (like when tying to blend in with the crowd in AC) the guards may attack you.

If you are part of a gang you can use them to get things to you, or the guards can do the same thing if you help them. You can use these things to attack people, for instance, and establish yourself as aggressive.

Using all of the resources available to you, your goal is to get out. You can try to survive until parole, revolt, or escape silently.

What is a video game idea you have that you're afraid no one will ever make?

A puzzle/adventure game which starts with the cliche "interrogation room" intro, but as you play through the game, you choose what you tell the interrogators.

Yoir truth, lies, and omissions will come back to bite you in the ass as the story progresses and you inadvertently implicate yourself or the interrogators catch inconsistencies.

But...what if I DON'T have a ton of game ideas?

Main Post:

Every conversation I see regarding beginning in game development almost always includes some element similar to this:

"Most people say they want to be game designers, but what they really want is to have someone else make their game idea. Everyone has tons of game ideas already."

But the first time I read this, I was in a bit of a deer-in-the-headlights trance. Because I don't have tons of ideas. I've never dedicated conscious thought to coming up with my own game ideas.

I love games. I love playing them. I love talking about them. I love reading about them. And since I've started dedicating real amounts of time to getting into game development, I've begun to love studying and analyzing games. So the problem isn't that I'm just not "gamer" enough.

I've just begun learning to program, but it feels like a natural fit (since my first computer, I've known I'd be working in some tech related field), and while a bigger hurdle for me, I'm even learning to enjoy the art.

I'm told I write well. Given the right prompt I can type away for hours. And I was once a musician, so the music and sound at least make sense, though the subject usually bores me.

The point is that I'm convinced that game development is my future career. The only problem is that I don't have good ideas! The few things I do dream up that actually interest me usually turn out to be unoriginal or unfun on later examination.

So what's up? If everyone already has tons of ideas, why don't I? Is it just a matter of confidence? How are you inspired? This lack of creativity can't mean I've already failed in game development, right?

tl;dr: People say everyone has tons of game ideas, but I don't. How do I get them, or does it mean I'm a lost cause?

Morning Edit: Holy responses, Batman! A lot of really great ideas. The gist of it seems to be

  1. Pick things from other games you liked or didn't like, and use and/or change them. It's true I do often think "This would be better if X," but I've never considered them my own idea. But I can see where people are coming from. It just takes the right touch to make it your own.
  2. Team up with someone more creative. Or as one person put it, every Jobs needs a Woz (somewhat scary, Woz didn't get the best end of the deal there). It makes sense, and I'm sure it'll be the game plan in the future.
  3. Immerse yourself in other art. This one I knew about, and I try to do when I get the opportunity. But I'm sensing I need to get out there more often and seek it out, rather than being passive about it.
  4. Draw from personal experiences and conversations. This is usually where the few ideas I have come from, now that I think about it. I think I'm going to start carrying around a notepad...

Anyway, this has all been really helpful and encouraging. You guys are awesome! I've seen the posts about people getting a ton of great advice then never returning, but I promise you I won't be like that. You'll hear from me again in the next year, with something to show for all of this.

Top Comment:

I'm the same way. Absolutely love everything about games, but have no ideas for anything I could make. My advice would just be to find a need and fill it. If you think the current quality of some genre isn't good enough or you see a game and think "you know what this needs?" couldn't hurt to start working on it. At the very least get your creative juices flowing and maybe spark a new idea

An open world superhero/super villain game where you can choose your starting power (probably something weak), unlock more powers, customise super suit, and balance life with your alter egos simple job Clark Kent style. That would be sick.
